Jamie Walton, increasingly recognised as a rising international soloist, played at St Mary of the Angels last evening.

Walton who is now being compared by critics to some of the great cellists of the past has appeared throughout much of Europe, the USA and the UK in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls and festivals and he enjoyed playing so much at St Mary of the Angels that he wants to come back.
His CD’s have regularly been selected into the Telegraph Top 10 of the year and CD of the week, and his recording of the Saint-Saens concertos (Philharmonia / Alexander Briger) went on to receive ecstatic reviews.
John Buton recently reviewed his recording of the Shosakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 and Britten Cello Symphony, calling it “a performance that is a true rival to Rostropovich. …Jamie Walton, on the evidence of this disc, is one of the finest of the younger cellists on the scene, …his beautifully balanced sound, utterly secure techniquie, and innate musicianship, rivals the finest versions on disc.”
St Mary’s, through their director of music, Robert Oliver, was very fortunate to have him play en-route to playing with the Auckland Philharmonia.
