How can we Sing the Lord’s Song in a Foreign Land?

Chris Skinner has released “How can we Sing the Lord’s Song in a Foreign Land?” a song for the Marist General Chapter about to take place in Rome.

Chris says, “The Chapter song is my response to the theme for the Chapter and I’m hoping the delegates will find it uplifting and supportive of the process during their month-long meeting.”

Chris was assisted by various Marists in bringing together “How can we Sing the Lord’s Song in a Foreign Land?” He’s grateful to:

  • Pete Roe who gave him some musical suggestions and was in his office as he was composing the song,
  • Pat Brophy and Pete McAfee gave him help with the Spanish lyrics and pronunciation, and
  • Pete Kiley and Brian Quin helped with the French lyrics.

Chris sees this song as a gift to his Marist confreres and hopes they will download by whoever wants to use it. The recording also includes a backing track and its Chris’ hope that Marists throughout the world could translate the song or adapt the lyrics in their own tongue.

How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a foreign land?
How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a foreign land?
How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
How can we sing? How can we sing?

The Spirit moves
The Founder speaks
For Mary’s life is lived and breathed a certain way
For us to hold
For us to share
For us to be her presence in our day
How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a foreign land?
How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
How can we sing? How can we sing?

Her spirit speaks
A thousand words
For Mary’s gentle way builds confidence and trust
She calls to us
Who bear her name
To go into the world and do the same

Hidden and unknown
Instruments of mercy
Make her song our own
As we live the journey
We like strangers stand
In our homeland
Mary’s- listening- heart
Is a place to start.

How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?
We can sing (Podemos cantar) The Lord’s Song, (el canto del Senor)
We can sing (Nous pouvon chanter) The Lord’s Song (la chanson du Seigneur),
We can sing (Podemus cantar) The Lord’s Song (el canto del Senor),
We can sing (Nous pouvon chanter) the Lord’s Song (la chanson du Seigneur)

Composed Chris Skinner SM 2009
