Marist bishop for Port-Vila Vanuatu

Pope Benedict has appointed Fr John Bosco Baremes bishop of Port-Vila.

John was born on August 30, 1960 in Han, Carteret Island, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. After novitiate in Tutu, Fiji, he was professed on January 18, 1981. He began is studies for the priesthood at the Seminary of Bomana, in Port Moresby, and completed them at the Pacific Regional Seminary, Suva, Fiji.

Ordained priest on 4 December 1987 and his first appointment was in Pouebo, New Caledonia.

In 1998 – 1999 he studied Pastoral Counseling at Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland, USA and from 2000 to 2002 he was director of Bouganiville Trauma Counseling Institute.

Before taking a sabbatical year this year, he had been provincial counselor of the Oceania Province since 2003.
